how do you know if you're a grown up? part 1

i've been feeling pretty grown up lately.

i've got a job. i've been working full time for about a year now, as well as part time but that's been going on forever. i have about the same amount of stuff, but it is better stuff. superior stuff. i go to bed at a reasonable hour and wake up at a totally unreasonable hour. i have a morning routine and mostly a packed lunch.

when i get home from work i make sure i look after my pigs and try and do some cleaning and general organising of life before i play flash mpgs and read comics and feminist blogs.

then i get on with some wedding planning, and feel bad about the stuff i should be doing and not contacting the people i miss or doing the work i should do, and then head to bed at a reasonable hour. i get more done after i get back from work than i used to do in a full 24 hour cycle as an underemployed person.

there are many many things at the moment and forever that are crazy uncertain and prone to massive and scary change. but there are many things that are *good* right now.

however, i admit: sometimes i envy the stuff other people have. lately it has occurred to me to buy such things. so i did.

earlier in the year i used my newfound cash to upgrade my bedroom from floral dull blue from the 70s to sleek black white and red. the makeover is mostly from wilkos and we can take it wherever we go next. but it was an interesting process of not just putting up with something, but using some money to make the situation better.

after this project, i started on my wardrobe, which was tattered and primanian, and solved this problem with substantial investment in H&M.

I then started on my face: i got some foundation from maybelleine or whatever it calls itself, it is like a mousse. it cost about £6, which is at least 3 times more than i've ever spent on a foundation. surprisingly, i found it to be a worthwhile investment and wondered if such a purchase automatically put me forward to some new level of maturity, the 'luxury products on your face' stage of life. i also now have got some moisturiser and for the first time (shockingly) some make up remover.

then i went for the feet: i got some cheap flats from dorothy perkins, because a) now that i have a job i can go for £12 on shoes instead of £4, and b) i have learned my lesson the hard way about £4 flats from primani.

then i've sat and wondered if i have just 'consumed' a new era of lifestyle. perhaps this is just the beginning. i can't remember if i feel better than when i started, but i reckon i at least *look* like i feel better...

update/consumption

i haven't written anything on here cuz i got a job and i moved house. both of which are proper time consuming. i don't do much at the moment that isn't a chore or work.

however, due to this 'work' buisness, i am now earning both money and the excuse/ability to improve things in my general life that are not *completly* rubbish, but could probably do with improving.

for example, i own 2 towels. both of these towels predate my current and previous relationships. to conclude, i've had em since i was at school. they both still do the job, but tbh, the piggehs have better quality towels than i do, so i might replace them both. (the towels, not the piggehs)

for another example, my shoes have a hole in them the size of a 1p. cracks in the soles mean i have to avoid even the smallest of puddles. this is not the best good plan really, living in the rainiest city in the uk means that ideally, you wear wellies.

that reminds me, my wellies have holes in too, i could do with some new ones.

also needed is a microwave, our current one is probably older than i am, it sparks and it makes the flat smell of burning. i have been eating cold ready brek this week and it's only just occurred to me that life doesn't have to be like this.

primani shocker

on the beeb right now is the 'primark - on the rack'

so far, they have highlighted

primark are against
* home working
* poverty pay
* child labour

- there are problems in keeping tabs on that, as experienced by all companies, and like most companies, primark send inspectors to make sure that the work done for their clothes is done in factories, however,

*subcontractors and factory manager can send garments home with their workers as homework without primani finding out - panorama can find this out though!

* as a result of this, children are employed, and people are paid below living wages

* women can be paid 52p a day - that's half of the legal minimum wage

suckage.

the prog has some heavy criticisms for the thowaway culture and bright, fashionable young things, poking fun at obessive primark shopping stories, and footage of the stampede on oxford street, amusing anecdotes about fights over pretty things, trends and thowaway fashions.

i'm kinda glad they compared the womens wages to the minimum wage. i get annoyed when shocumentaries start telling you 'this person earns 7p an hour!' and you are like 'oh no! that's terrible!' but if that 7p can get them just as far as the £5.52 can get us, you start to think... so why is it so bad? i mean it is, but i can't help but think we have a distorted picture.

i'm glad there have been some talking heads on the show as well who say things like 'just because something is cheap, it doesn't mean unethical practices, and just because something retails at a much higher price, that doesn't mean it was made in ethical ways.

makes me think...

republic, summertime, shopping, happy

first, the dress, which is gorgeous. shame there's no where to wear it!!
bit dull but i liked, i wanna try out the whole frills thing at some point
very cute bag, i love it already, very much.
last time i went with the checks, i lost out in a big way, they just weren't rly me... so nothing can really explain why i want this ugly top, i just do.

books shcmooks

I found this essay online:

http://www.nerve.com/personalessays/shukert/theanorexicscookbook/index.asp?page=1

and liked the writer so much that her book is on it's way to me via amazon, and should reach me in... 3 weeks lol but yeh whatever.

The book i ordered is called "Have You No Shame?: And Other Regrettable Stories"

and it looks like one giant mess of a book, with some grim stories and a kinda funny edge. i need something funny about now, there's too much to worry about in the world!!
